Can a Cold Shower Help Shed Pounds and Stress? Part 4

Updated: Jan 25

Who in the world would willing want to take a cold shower when you have the option of a nice hot shower? Before you stop reading, let me say I am not advocating you take a cold shower for an extended period.

Cold exposure can increase dopamine levels by up to 250%!

I do this every day. Let me explain. Yes, there are known benefits of taking a cold shower, but they are too extreme for most people, including myself. The last thing we want to do is stress people out.

This cold exposure can increase dopamine levels by up to 250%! The cold water can also decrease cortisol levels, giving you more energy and keeping your body in fat-burning mode.

My morning routine

Every morning, I take a warm to a hot shower and do all the usual bathing. Then when I am finished, instead of turning off the water, I slowly turn the water from hot to cold.

It was a bit of a shock the first couple of times it did. Mostly because I was afraid of my reaction, now I look forward to it. It helps wake me up. Hot showers relax you; a cold finish helps put the pep in my step. It is invigorating, like going for a swim in a lake or ocean. Also, when I step out of the shower, the cooler room air does not bother me as much.

Coldwater acts as gentle electroshock on the body, sending signals to the brain and releasing endorphins. This cold exposure can increase dopamine levels by up to 250%! The cold water can also decrease cortisol levels, giving you more energy and aiding your body to not gain weight. It also acts to help reduce anxiety in some people. A calmer person will not be reaching for unhealthy foods s they go about their day.

So, as you can see, the Stress Free Diet approach is not a single thing like cutting carbs or counting points. We have already outlined several positive strategies for weight loss, and we still have not talked about the food yet.

An important side note, I have installed a filter in my shower. They are inexpensive, and if you think about being in an enclosed space where you breathe the steam into your lungs and the hot water opens the pores of your skin. Our skin absorbs 60% of what comes in contact with it. So why not have the cleanest water you can get, even if it is cold for a bit.

We hope this helps you on your journey to a Stress Free Life.
